Article: Schools Shine a Positive Light on Indians

There was just one tiny Pilgrim cutout on Lenora Steinkamp's D.C. classroom wall even though Thanksgiving was less than 24 hours away.

Every nook and cranny was filled with symbols of American Indian culture and history. In one corner sat colorful drums, beads and tepees made by Steinkamp's kindergartners at John Eaton Elementary School in Northwest Washington.

Hanging from the ceiling were Indian sand paintings. On the floor children sprawled, cutting out paper versions of buffalo-hide vests. And at a table, children ground corn to make fry bread.

At a D.C. high school a few miles away, 11th-graders heatedly discussed the stereotypes they've learned over the years about Indians. ...
