The competition was hot, spicy hot. But the panel of six judges could take the heat.

"I like chili; I really do," said a convincing Gary Bishop, board chairman for the Hempfield Area Recreation Commission.

With that, the judge took a swig of water before dipping his blue plastic spoon into another of the 10 numbered Styrofoam cups before him. Each held a different concoction that had been ladled, moments earlier, from crockpots lining an upstairs wall at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville.

When all the chili powder had settled, it was a tardy seventh judge who broke a tie and made HARC front desk clerk Lynn Malick the champion.
