A conservative state lawmaker wants to strengthen Pennsylvania's
ban on gay marriages by also prohibiting the recognition of civil
unions among same-sex couples.
But the way he's going about it troubles some like-minded
legislators, specifically those who are working to make the adoption
process easier in Pennsylvania.
State Rep. Jerry Birmelin, a Republican from northeastern
Pennsylvania, said he will insert his ban on civil unions next week
into a popular bill that would increase state subsidies to parents
who adopt neglected or abused children.
The move comes amid a growing national debate over whether gays
should be legally allowed to marry.
