Telephone customers have come to enjoy the silence offered by the federal Do Not Call Registry that prohibits random telemarketing calls. No more interrupted dinners. No more pitches for dry basements, replacement windows or discount insurance.

But now the telecommunications industry is poised to launch a new assault on phone privacy - cell phone privacy. And this ploy not only would annoy customers but extract money for the "service," whether they allow it, or refuse it.

Fortunately, local U.S. Rep. Joseph R. Pitts quickly has proposed legislation to stop mass cell-phone telemarketing, and his strategy is winning nationwide approval.
