If the proposed downtown convention center is to work, it may need the King Street Parking Garage.

Project officials said today they have buried the idea of constructing a new 150- to 200-space parking deck underneath the convention center.

"That is just not going to work," said Ted Darcus, chairman of the Convention Center Authority.

He believes the only viable option for the Authority is to buy the 750-space King Street Parking Garage, which is adjacent to the proposed $124 million convention center and Marriott hotel.

"That is the option we're going with and working on," said Darcus.
