Health maintenance organizations are continuing to rein in the
cost of medical insurance - but consumers do not favor the most
tightly controlled plans, a survey by the Group Health Association
of America suggests.
The industry trade group's survey, which was released
yesterday, found that HMOs generally plan to increase their premiums
more slowly next year than in the past or to cut them. However, the
most popular HMOs - those that use independent networks of doctors
instead of running their own clinics - are raising their premiums
the most.
Once an obscure alternative to traditional health insurance,
HMOs cover 50.5 million Americans, up 11 percent since last year,
