Article: Mortality rates improve; But readmissions also up at Pa. hospitals

The good news is that mortality rates improved slightly in hospitals in 30 Pennsylvania counties from 2002 to 2003. The bad news is more people had to be readmitted for follow-up care after their initial treatment.

"Both sides of the equation can be seen in these latest numbers, with mortality rates down but readmissions on the rise," said Marc P. Volavka, executive director of Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, an independent state agency charged with collecting and analyzing information to improve health care in the state.
