Five broadly smiling representatives of Sinn Fein met with
British civil servants today in the first public political talks
since 1921 between the British government and the political arm of
the Irish Republican Army.
Although no substantive agreements were reached during the
2 1/2-hour session, which took place on the 100th day of an IRA
cease-fire, both sides pronounced it a "good beginning" and agreed
to meet again Dec. 19.
The meeting is considered an important step toward ending
25 years of violence between Catholic nationalists, who want to
unite Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland to the south,
and Protestant unionists, who want the province to remain part of ...
