BISHOP JOHN R. Keating of Arlington recently decreed that
despite papal permission, girls will not be allowed to serve on the
altar in his diocese. His critics have called the decision sexist,
but it has already established a more prayerful spirit in the
church. I, for one, got down on my knees after reading the news and
thanked God that I did not live in the diocese of Arlington.
I also prayed for any of the 300,000 Catholics in the diocese
who happen to be raising daughters. Some day these folks will have
the unenviable task of explaining why boys in their diocese can help
the priest on the altar at Mass and girls cannot. This will be
