Catherine Filene Shouse, the strong-willed philanthropist who
almost single-handedly created Wolf Trap Farm Park and then
dominated its operations for two decades, died of a heart ailment
yesterday at her home in Naples, Fla. She was 98.
Shouse, the daughter of a wealthy Boston merchandising family,
designed Wolf Trap as the only U.S. national park for the performing
arts and remained at its helm long after she founded it in the
1960s.
Her strong support helped the center rise from the ashes of a
disastrous fire in 1982. The gutted theater was rebuilt with the aid
of an $8.5 million federal loan, and Wolf Trap was able to continue
as a showplace for the arts.
