Mary K. LeMense, a fifth-generation Washingtonian, remembers
going to the Spring Valley Shopping Center during World War II to
trade news with neighbors.
The center on Massachusetts Avenue NW at 49th Street was a
"place where neighbors gravitated there to talk as they did during
snowstorms," she said.
She and her husband, Joseph, moved into their current house a
few blocks from the shopping center in 1960, and raised five
children there. Joseph, an orthodontist, practices in a house on
41st Street that was his family's home; his wife works in his
office.
"We're very comfortable here, after being here so long," Mary
LeMense said.
