It is hard to imagine a time when the splendid west corridor of the National Gallery of Art looked better than it does today.

Back in 1941 when it opened, maybe - all startling and crisp and new. But today, wow, it looks rich and full, as if overnight it had a strange dream come true.

Strange, but wonderful. In it, you see, are two stupendous Old World architectural models that look as if they, too, had an unlikely dream fulfilled: finding the perfect resting place in the New World.
