Article: EPA Approves Plan for New Class of Low-Polluting Cars in Northeast

The Environmental Protection Agency yesterday approved a plan for 12 states - including Maryland and Virginia - and Washington, D.C., to dramatically reduce smog by requiring automakers to introduce a new class of cleaner-burning vehicles to be sold primarily in the Northeast.

The decision could lead to the development and marketing of cars and trucks on the East Coast that pollute at least 70 percent less than those on the road today do.

The plan allows the jurisdictions - which also include Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont - to try to meet stringent federal air quality standards by giving ...
