Lawrence Russell Dewey, 93, a retired Army major general who
also had worked as a consultant and for the Central Intelligence
Agency, died Dec. 18 at his home in Washington. He had Parkinson's
disease.
Gen. Dewey was a native of Des Moines. He was commissioned in
the cavalry after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West
Point. Before World War II, his assignments included the 3rd
Cavalry, also known as the Old Guard, at Fort Myer.
During World War II, he served in Europe and North Africa with
the 1st and 2nd Armored divisions, becoming the head of a combat
command. After the war, he was a student and instructor at the
National War College and did staff work with NATO. During ...
