A coalition of Silver Spring community and business leaders
appears ready to give County Executive Douglas M. Duncan the
political backing he needs to carry out one of his most
controversial campaign stands - killing a plan to build a regional
mall in downtown Silver Spring.
Two dozen Silver Spring activists have been meeting at Duncan's
behest to study whether Montgomery County should pull the plug on
the long-planned Silver Triangle mall and start soliciting other
proposals for the largely vacant downtown site.
Committee members said last week that they tentatively have
agreed to advise Duncan to scrap the mall plan.
