Tour de France champion Floyd Landis is a fast learner.

His initial steps following disclosure by the French anti-doping agency that his testosterone to epitestosterone levels were illegally high were clumsy and sounded contrived. He said the unusually high testosterone levels were natural or that they might have been caused by whiskey he drank the night before. And he insisted the French anti- doping agency's tests were flawed. He sounded like someone groping for alibis.

Six months later, Landis, a Lancaster County native, is taking steps that offer him at least a small chance to clear his name.
