I found your article on trans fats ("How to save a life: Banning
trans fats won't do it," Intell, April 7) interesting as a cultural
piece, but I would like to add some scientific medical information.
Trans fats have been researched in more than Men's Health
magazine, and their main risk is in the coronary blood and other
vessels, not so much in the obesity dilemma. A ban on trans fats is
of significant benefit in reducing heart-attack risk. Moderate use is
not safe. Adding trans fats like french fries (cooked with trans
fats) to an otherwise healthy diet can obviously be your choice, but
one shouldn't feel less guilt, as the coronary arteries still will be
affected ...
