Article: Clinton Announces Cut In White House Staff

President Clinton yesterday proposed a reduction of 350 people in the White House staff, using some creative accounting to send a symbolic message that his administration will share the sacrifice asked of other Americans when Clinton announces his economic program next week.

"The government must do more but make do with less," Clinton said, posed in front of giant, four-color charts that showed a 25 percent staff reduction at the White House. On the perk front, officials said they were changing the rules of the White House Mess to allow more junior staff to use the West Wing cafeteria and eliminating four of the 108 cars that take administration officials to and from the White House.
