As recently as the 1970s, a gold watch was a symbolic death sentence. I have attended numerous corporate retirement parties where the loyal employee is lauded for his many years of service and dedication to the company, feted with cookies and punch, and presented his watch.

Friends give him the "Don't bother me, I'm retired" T-shirt and diligently inquire as to what he will do with his newly found free time. "I'll visit the kids, spend sometime rearranging the garage and probably go fishing. I really don't plan to do very much."
