There were times in the past when it seemed that Jodie Foster
didn't want to be Jodie Foster. A decade or so ago, she'd come down
from Yale to New York to catch a screening, heavier than usual,
draped in those baggy peasant dresses, with lots of scarves,
submerging her celebrity identity in an undergraduate's anonymous
costume. She'd sit in the back, preferring - maybe hoping - not to be
recognized. She'd come to watch somebody's latest picture, not her
own. Jodie Foster was still a part of the movies, a legend even, but
keeping a safe distance from all that.
