Article: Report assails 'antiquated' Coast Guard equipment

WASHINGTON - The Coast Guard's communications hardware is woefully out of date and threatens to undermine lifesaving and homeland security missions, says a Transportation Department report released Friday.

The report by the department's inspector general concludes that the Coast Guard's 30-year-old National Distress and Response System is "antiquated, expensive to maintain and difficult to upgrade." The Coast Guard is part of the Department of Transportation.
