SCITUATE - Driving the school department's $1.99 million override request that town meeting will consider Monday night is $900,000 earmarked for special education.

The $3.9 million special-education budget request for next year is 34 percent more than the amount approved for this school year. Much of the increase is out of hands of the school department, school officials say.

While many residents remain critical of the override request, school officials say most of next year's budget request is simply unavoidable.
