ALLERGY ALERT Medications don't have to knock you out

For many people, the joys of spring are all but ruined by allergies.

Nearly 40 percent of Americans suffer from spring allergies. And until recently, the only relief came from antihistamines, which do block allergic reactions - but also incapacitate people with drowsiness.

A new generation of prescription antihistamines, including Claritin, Allegra and Zyrtec, offers relief without sedation. Doctors also say steroid nasal sprays are very effective.

According to experts, avoiding allergens while finding the right combination of medicines is the key to relief.
