BRAINTREE - Archbishop Williams High School will decide whether to stay under the umbrella of the Archdiocese of Boston or run its own affairs while remaining a Catholic high school, the new principal says.

Mary Lou Sadowski, who took over the top post this fall, strongly denied reports circulating for months that the 53-year-old school in Braintree, which draws students from throughout the South Shore, will change its name to Williams Academy and drastically increase tuition.

"Why would we change our name?" she said in an interview. "We have alumni who have school rings that say AWHS."
