EASTON - When the United States invaded Afghanistan after last
year's terrorist attacks, Professor Mohammed el-Nawawy - like the Al-
Jazeera news network - was in position.
The Arab-language station was the only network with a bureau in
Kabul.
The new Stonehill College communications professor had researched
the network's fiery "Crossfire"-style talk show, "The Opposite
Direction," for several years in preparation for an academic article.
After Sept. 11, the station with exclusive access to Osama bin
Laden and Taliban leaders was big international news. Already experts
