Construction crews on Monday are expected to start excavating about 3,000 tons of contaminated soil around Milton High School.

School buildings project manager Joel Wolk of Gilbane Building Co. said removal is expected to take two to 2 1/2 weeks.

Construction crews working on the Brook Road site discovered the contaminated soil in October. Subsequent testing conducted by GZA GeoEnvironmental of Norwood determined the substance to be oil and estimated that about 3,000 tons - or 2,000 cubic yards of soil - would need to be hauled away.

The high school on Brook Road is expected to swap locations with the middle school on Gile Road in September.
