What is it that dooms every filmmaker who attempts to bring Miguel
de Cervantes's classic tale "Don Quixote" to the screen?
Is it something akin to the Red Sox's Curse of the Bambino? Or is
it merely a cruel self-fulfilling prophecy for every filmmaker who
dares tilt at windmills?
After experiencing the shattered dreams on display in the
engrossing "Lost in La Mancha," I'd have to believe it's a little bit
of both. But you also have to wonder if the movie gods intended "Don
Quixote" to serve as a comeuppance for any filmmaker cocky enough to
dream the impossible dream. Among its victims are the immortal Orson
Welles, who slaved at his "Quixote" for 28 years without ever
completing it, and ...
