JoAnne Akalaitis, who was handpicked by the late Joseph Papp to
succeed him at the helm of the celebrated New York Shakespeare
Festival, appears likely to be replaced by director-playwright George
C. Wolfe, sources at the festival said yesterday.
The replacement would come if the festival board acts, as
expected, on a restructuring recommendation it will receive on
Monday.
According to Larry E. Condon, chairman of the festival's executive
committee, the committee intends to recommend to the full board that
it reorganize the management structure of the festival, whose home is
the Public Theater, reinstituting the position of producer, which was
