Lou Reed, the sinewy, serious guitarist with the gravel-dragged
voice, brought his dark act to Boston on Saturday night and left with
a smile on his face. Touring in support of two vastly different CDs -
"The Raven," a tribute to Edgar Allen Poe, and "NYC Man: The
Compilation," a remastered retrospective of his work - Reed played a
marathon 2 1/2-hour show at the Orpheum Theatre that touched on songs
from both releases. Reed, 61, wore black leather pants and a black T-
shirt and played a Fender Telecaster throughout the night. The show
commenced when Reed played the famous three chords that make up
"Sweet Jane," the song he recorded with Velvet Underground in 1970.
Right away he laughed ...
