Even when she was fighting for her life, Mary Hoitt came to work.

Hoitt, 50, who died of cancer Saturday, was an administrative assistant in the Rockland town treasurer's office. By all accounts, she was a very good one.

Treasurer Karen Sepeck said Hoitt, who was diagnosed last September, would work some days for up to five hours, through her pain.

"We'd have to make her go," Sepeck said. "She'd say, 'I'm leaving in an hour.' " The hour would pass, followed by another, she added, laughing.

"She was wicked conscientious," Assistant Treasurer Jane Sforza said.

Sepeck, treasurer for 20 years, agreed.

"I never had anyone care so much."
