For generations of Quincy residents, 7E's Clam Stand on Southern Artery was a place for well-known seafood and classic fun.

But for Charles Sevigny Sr., who died July 7 at his home in Cotuit, it was more than that. It was in the back room of the store where he began making "The World's Thinnest Ribbon Candy," the hard candy that would one day help him become a professional candymaker.

It was 1940 when Sevigny began making the paper-thin candy with his brother in that back room. The brothers manufactured the hard candy seasonally, because the product was particularly popular during Christmas.
