Bareboat charters in the Caribbean and southern California have
lured sailing fans to spend their vacation time and money in those
areas for decades. In New England's weather shortened season, such
ventures have had some tough sailing with only a few exceptions. One
of those that has survived, Charters Unlimited based at Marina Bay in
North Quincy, has done so with some inventive organization that
breaks away from the Caribbean model. In bareboat charters, sailing
enthusiasts rent a boat for a given period and do all the sailing
themselves. In southern waters, companies have fleets of boats that
