Jim Watson doesn't have a thing against the North Shore. The
Cohasset Hardware Co. owner has taken his boat up there from his
lifelong hometown any number of times over the years. The North
Shore is a pretty part of the state, Watson allows with a genial nod,
but it's not the South Shore.
Up in Marblehead, Betty Hunt agrees that yes, the South Shore is
lovely. Then she pauses, not wishing to offend, "but it really can't
compare," she added.
It may be Massachusetts' most polite rivalry. Neither shore disses
the other like Red Sox and Yankees fans. There are no north-south
budget and policy battles in the State House. Neither nurses the
chronic sense of grievance that ...
