With the approach of warm breezes and the outdoor-deck-lounging
season, Prince George's County officials are spreading the word about
new regulations designed to prevent decks from collapsing - as one
did in Bowie last summer, injuring five people.
Under toughened building-code rules put in place this winter, all
decks must be secured with four posts, or have a design that has been
inspected and approved by a certified engineer, according to the
county's chief building inspector, Willie Furr.
County inspectors found that the deck that toppled to the ground
in Bowie on Sept. 5 was supported on one side with two posts but not
securely fastened to the house.
