Trying to shrink the larger-than-life story of Ray Charles into the restrictive confines of a conventional biopic is indeed folly that does neither the man nor his fans justice. I mean how many orphaned sons of black sharecroppers go on to revolutionize music by crossing over into practically every genre and gaining huge popularity at a time when black artists lacked universal appeal? And how many of those precious few did it after losing their eyesight when they were just 7 years old?
