When college freshmen come home for Thanksgiving, many parents worry if the skinny child they left at the dorm, will now resemble a plump turkey. Is the dreaded weight gain - the so called "freshman 15" - an inevitable part of the college experience? It's quite possible, according to a study conducted last year at Cornell University that tracked weight gain and eating habits of freshmen.

The researchers found freshmen gain an average of 4.2 pounds just during their first 12 weeks on campus - making the full 15 plausible in a year. All-you-can-eat dining facilities accounted for 20 percent of the weight gain. Students tended to take larger-than-usual
