In 1638, a young man by the name of John Harvard died of
tuberculosis and, in his last act of altruism, left his library and
half his estate to a small college in Cambridge. It adopted his name
and went on to become an academic institution of unparalleled
prestige, which continues a long history of educating the brightest
and most talented minds in the world.
But, quite frankly, who cares? In a more important contribution to
civilization, Harvard brought with him from England William
Shakespeare's (alleged) private beer recipes.
Somehow the founders of John Harvard's Brew House managed to wrap
their greasy little fingers around those recipes and, in their own
act of altruism, have provided ...
