They hung around well past midnight, hundreds of Red Sox fans chanting, "Let's go, Red Sox," "Thank you, Red Sox," "Red Sox Nation," and, finally, "Thank you, Theo." And they weren't alone.

As they shouted from the Busch Stadium boxes behind the Red Sox dugout, many of the Sox players who were the target of their affection joined them on the field - waving, slapping high-fives and even hugging. At one point, Pedro Martinez took the coveted trophy and ran toward left field, which was a feat in itself, because in the bedlam that was their clubhouse, covered with plastic and dripping with champagne, Tim Wakefield had clutched that trophy so hard that he wouldn't let ...
