"A DEEPER BLUE" by Bruce Katz (Severn Records)
Marshfield's Bruce Katz is one of the most prolific modern
bluesmen, and his fifth solo album, released last fall, proves that
he's also one of the most consistent. Katz's mastery of the Hammond B-
3 organ is well documented, but here his work is enhanced by the
presence of his fine quartet. Guitarist Ronnie Earl, in whose band
The Broadcasters Katz worked for five years in the 1990s, guests here
on two songs. But the bigger revelation is the overlooked six-string
genius of Waltham's Mike Williams, the regular guitarist in the Katz
band. The rhythm section of Ralph Rosen on drums and bassist Rod
Carey is as sharp on the beat as ever. But ...
