Salamanca lies like a precious gem cast by a kindly fate at the
edge of a greening plane. Spaniards regard the small city in the
middle of the Iberian Peninsula as the "soul of the Spanish nation,"
the essence of the country's culture and art. It is home to most of
the nation's impressive historic and artistic legacy, and as part of
the province of Castilla y Leon, it's the birthplace of Castillan,
the very purest form of the Spanish language. Domed cathedrals
dominate the skyline, and dun-colored walls embrace the town in a
