BOSTON - Some opponents say they will push for an outright ban on
gay marriage and civil unions in 2008 rather than back a ballot
question next year to allow same-sex civil unions in place of gay
marriage.
"Civil unions is just another name for same-sex marriage," said
Maria Parker, interim executive director of the Massachusetts
Catholic Conference, the lobbying arm of the state's four Roman
Catholic dioceses. "In voting for this amendment, people are
automatically endorsing something they may completely disagree with,
and that's not fair."
