QUINCY - The city is gearing up to ban gasoline tanker trucks from parts of Quincy in a move that could set off a truck traffic showdown with neighboring Braintree.

A bill now before the Quincy City Council would essentially localize language already in federal highway laws that would authorize the city's public works commissioner to regulate where trucks carrying hazardous cargos can and can't go. Tanker trucks sidestepping those rules would be subject to $500 fines, according to the measure.
