Recalling a sight unseen since the legendary coach Bear Bryant's
last Sugar Bowl victory, the No. 2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide
tonight secured a national championship by defeating No. 1-ranked
Miami, 34-13, in the 59th Sugar Bowl before 76,789 at the Louisiana
Superdome.
Only the formality of Saturday's media and coaches' polls
separates Alabama (13-0) from its first national title since 1979,
when it wrapped up the season by beating Arkansas on Jan. 1, 1980, in
the Sugar Bowl. Since then, two coaches saw their attempts to live up
to Bryant's legacy end unceremoniously. Only now, under a former
Bryant player and assistant named Gene Stallings, has the Crimson
Tide returned to the top.
