If the eccentric Pennsylvania art collector had had his way, none of the hundreds of art lovers standing in line outside the National Gallery of Art yesterday would have been allowed to see his collection of masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, van Gogh and others.

Instead, Washingtonians, as well as visitors who postponed trips home to London, Seattle, Dallas and Detroit, got close enough to the paintings to study brush strokes, search for artistic secrets and offer their own critiques.

"This is so different from his style," one woman whispered as she scanned Renoir's "Garden Scene in Brittany."

"I thought it was somebody else. The lines are so sharp."
