Article: Judge's ruling gives town a hole-in-one; Land Court decision confirms first-refusal right to purchase golf course

A judge has ruled that the town can still purchase the Rockland Golf Course, more than two years after a developer took it over with the intent of building senior housing on half of it.

In his ruling, Land Court Judge Keith Long wrote that Hingham Land LLC concealed from town officials its plans for the 74-acre golf course, which is valued at $2.6 million. The town has first right to buy the course because the property was taxed for years as recreation land.

"It's pretty cut-and-dried," Selectmen Chairman Louis Valanzola said. "They have to give proper notification to the town, which they neglected to do. It's too bad that it took so long to come to fruition."
