Some of the least-loved men in baseball are looking for a little
respect. A contract dispute between minor league baseball umpires and
the farm leagues affiliated with Major League Baseball has drawn
little attention. But it could disrupt games in spring training - and
possibly beyond - for hundreds of minor league ballplayers and their
fans.
While umpires at all levels often go unnoticed until there's a
controversial call, their role in the minor leagues is key to major
league scouts and aspiring players. Over time, their calls help
compile the statistical record on which players are judged, promoted
and released.
