Certain events such as weddings and proms require a tuxedo and, while there are many styles and labels to choose from, the first decision is often whether to buy or rent. Some say the cost of buying a tuxedo is not warranted because the average person wears a tux only a handful of times. On average, a tux will cost $400 to $600.

"If you buy, a tux is just going to sit in the closet and collect dust," said Neil Foster, manager of Tuxedo Time in Braintree, which also has locations in Boston and Pembroke.

But you could easily recoup that investment if you attend at least four or five formal functions.
