False fire alarms cost Braintree businesses more than $38,000 in fines last year, with South Shore Plaza responsible for more than a third of that total, according to fire department figures.

Fire crews have responded to 79 false alarms at the mall since August. Firefighters frequently made multiple trips a day there, including Nov. 4, when they were summoned 10 times.

So far, the mall's owners have paid $14,550 in fines. Another $150 is owed from three false alarms July 12.
