Article: False alarms raking in real cash; Despite $38,000 in revenue, chief says they strain fire dept.

The Patriot Ledger

False fire alarms cost Braintree businesses more than $38,000 in fines last year, with South Shore Plaza responsible for more than a third of that total, according to fire department figures.

Fire crews have responded to 79 false alarms at the mall since August. Firefighters frequently made multiple trips a day there, including Nov. 4, when they were summoned 10 times.

So far, the mall's owners have paid $14,550 in fines. Another $150 is owed from three false alarms July 12. Most of the mall's false alarms aren't because of faulty systems, but rather dust from construction crews or smoke from restaurant kitchens, fire officials
