Article: Fresh spinach is also pulled from stores

- Local supermarket chains and smaller stores have pulled fresh spinach from their salad bars and deli counters after reports that it was not only bagged spinach that posed a risk to E. coli bacteria but fresh spinach, too.

Whole Foods in Hingham and Hannaford Supermarket chains are two of the larger chain stores that removed the products almost immediately after the Food and Drug Administration first warned consumers to refrain from eating bagged and fresh spinach.

The only spinach being sold at Hannaford's is frozen and canned spinach, said Rebecca Howes, a company spokeswoman.
