School officials in Canton are calling for a special town meeting
in December to ask voters for a tax increase that would help offset a
$2.4 million budget deficit for fiscal 2008.
"It's not too soon," said Superintendent Irene Sherry Kaplan.
"We've had a townwide structured deficit for the last three years and
it's projected to be the same next year."
School officials have asked the selectmen to schedule a December
special town meeting to ask residents to override Proposition 2 1/2
tax limits to increase the operating budget.
The town has approved 10 of 17 overrides for improvements such as
an addition to the Hansen Elementary School about 10 years ago, and
