School officials in Canton are calling for a special town meeting in December to ask voters for a tax increase that would help offset a $2.4 million budget deficit for fiscal 2008.

"It's not too soon," said Superintendent Irene Sherry Kaplan. "We've had a townwide structured deficit for the last three years and it's projected to be the same next year."

School officials have asked the selectmen to schedule a December special town meeting to ask residents to override Proposition 2 1/2 tax limits to increase the operating budget.
